Legal aid social workers only serve current legal aid clients. Once a client`s case has been accepted for representation by a lawyer, the lawyer decides whether or not to refer the client for social work services. Professionals from other organizations who work with low-income clients in the Legal Aid service area may call the Social Work Supervisor to discuss the appropriateness of legal aid referrals. In addition to direct client work and legal collaboration, our social workers have led the following projects at LSNYC and throughout New York City: The benefits of working with a social worker are different for each client, but are largely aimed at helping the client work effectively with their lawyer and increasing the client`s stability and security. The client, social worker and lawyer identify specific problems and a plan is developed to meet the client`s needs.

The plan may include support in areas such as housing, mental health, addictions, communications, claims, medical care, transportation, assistance with utilities and others. Clients rely on the social worker for help with these and emerging issues during the period they have an open case with legal aid. For over 20 years, social workers have changed the way we provide comprehensive legal services to our clients. LSNYC social workers work with lawyers and other lawyers to ensure that our clients` basic needs are met and that they are able to engage thoughtfully in their legal affairs.

We believe that by addressing the non-legal needs of our clients, we are able to achieve better legal outcomes for our clients. Currently, our social work leaders and social workers work with many practice areas at LSNYC, including education, domestic and domestic violence, immigration, housing, disability, and public services.
